What is 4G?
4G is the fourth generation of the mobile network. We introduced this standard in the Netherlands back in 2013. It was the successor to 3G, the standard that really got mobile internet going.
With 4G, more was possible in one fell swoop. The faster speeds made it easy to stream music and watch videos on the go without any stutter.
At T-Mobile we have always released a fast and stable 4G network. In practice, this gives you an average speed of around 78 Mbps.
What is 5G?
5G is the successor to 4G. This fifth generation of the mobile network has been available in the Netherlands since 2020. But the ‘real’ 5G is still a while away. This requires the 3.5 GHz band.
The frequency auction of this is scheduled for the end of 2023, the beginning of 2024. This means that the 5G network can really be launched, and you will achieve even higher speeds.
Yet you already often use 5G. That is a combination between 4G and a small part of what 5G currently makes possible. These are the advantages of the current 5G network:
- Slightly higher download speed
- Lower reaction time
- Stream more stable
- Better connection in busy areas (stadium, festival).
Difference 4G and 5G
The difference between 4G and 5G is currently still a bit on the small side. Yet both networks differ on these points.
5G is faster
4G is not going away anytime soon, but 5G is the future. When the real 5G frequencies are auctioned, you will achieve higher speeds.
This means that videos load faster, you stream your Netflix series in the highest quality and streaming your favorite game on your phone is no problem at all. Thanks to the higher response speed, you can also respond faster to online games
The capacity of 5G is greater
Do you want to share a story during the concert of your favorite artist? With the hustle and bustle around you, that is not always possible. With 5G, those problems will soon be a thing of the past. You have a larger capacity with 5G.
You can even share your experiences with everyone during a concert in the Johan Cruijff Arena. This is also an advantage for emergency services. There is no chance that they cannot communicate due to overload.
Useful for smart devices
With 5G you also have a good alternative to WiFi. It is lightning fast and therefore ideal for devices with which you cannot make a good connection.
Think of a security camera that you have at the campsite or in the car. With 5G the car can receive updates or you can see if the car is charged when it is an electric car.
4G or 5G?
The difference between 4G and 5G is still small. The really big steps in terms of speed and convenience will come later, when the frequencies have been auctioned. Nevertheless, 5G as it is now already has a number of advantages, making the switch wise.
